Termite infestation is a subject that makes most timber suppliers across Australia cringe. Australia has its share of termites and all homeowners must be very careful to make sure their homes aren’t infested. Termites are attracted to timber, making it even more essential to use as many preventative measures as possible.
One of the saving graces of timber is that, even if there is a termite infestation, you can replace the boards that are damaged as opposed to replacing entire walls or floors. However, a bit of knowledge can decrease the chances of a termite infestation in your home.
Termites love timber. Consequently, you should make sure that there isn’t a woodpile by your home. Whether it’s building refuse, old stumps, timber stacks or logs, get them away from your home. Construction crews often leave leftover timber underneath the home when they finish. If there is timber beneath your home, remove it, too.
The timber that is most at risk is that which is adjacent to the ground. You can either use treated timber or you can use timber that is naturally resistant to termites. For timber that is in your home, the standard techniques for sealing a home will keep them out.
Fix all water pipes because termites are also attracted to water. They are also attracted to humidity, so make sure your home is ventilated to keep moisture out from under the house.
Make sure your concrete slab is properly laid and has no holes or cracks. Termites can chew through a lot of building materials, but not through concrete.
Have your home inspected at least twice a year for termites in areas such as Brisbane and Sydney. The highest period of termite activity is late spring to early summer. Make sure one inspection is done during that timeframe.
