Our Ironbark Decking S&B is a strong, tough choice for your next deck project. Our Ironbark timber decking is a mix of the grey and red varieties of Ironbark and thus the colouring of the boards you receive will vary from bright red to dark grey and a mix of both.
Benefits of Ironbark Decking S&B
- Naturally resistant to termites & lyctid borers as a Class 1 durability timber
- Improved stability & minimal shrinkage after installation from kiln dried hardwood
- Fewer natural flaws for a consistently premium finish with S&B grade
- Ironbark is a bush-fire resistant timber (BAL 12.5 and 19 zones)
Over time without maintenance, this timber will turn light grey and lose most of it’s vibrancy. Keep the colour vibrant with a quality timber oil applied regularly.

Why choose Ironbark Decking?
Ironbark has a long track record of highly durable and tested projects that go well beyond residential decking. It’s been specified for wharves, bridges, railway sleepers and mining infrastructure for generations. The mix of grey and red ironbark means you get natural colour variation across the deck, ranging from light grey to deep red and brown. No two Ironbark decks will look exactly the same.
What is Ironbark timber?
Ironbark decking is an Australian hardwood sourced from a mix of grey and red ironbark trees grown across Austraia. It's one of the most durable decking timbers available in Australia, with a long history of use in both residential and heavy industrial applications.
How hard and durable is Ironbark?
Ironbark carries a Class 1 durability rating (the highest available). It's naturally resistant to termites, lyctid borers and decay, making it an exceptionally long-lasting choice for outdoor decking.
What colour is Ironbark decking?
Because it's a natural mix of grey and red ironbark, you'll get colour variation across the boards. This colour ranges from light grey and chocolate tones through to deeper reds and browns. This variation is part of the appeal and means no two Ironbark decks look exactly the same.
What is kiln dried timber and why does it matter?
Kiln drying is a controlled process that reduces the moisture content of the timber before it reaches you. For decking, this means the size profile of the boards will have less shrinkage, movement and gapping after installation compared to green or air-dried timber.
Is Ironbark suitable for bushfire prone areas?
Ironbark has good natural fire resistance and is generally suitable for use in bushfire attack level zones BAL 12.5 and 19 (All AS3959 required applications). You hould always confirm the specific BAL requirements for your property with your building certifier before buying any decking material.
How often does Ironbark decking need to be oiled?
Once to twice a year is a general guide, depending on sun exposure and foot traffic. Before re-oiling, clean the deck with a dedicated timber deck cleaner to remove weathered surface oil and oxidation, leaving the boards ready to absorb a fresh coat evenly.
What's the difference between S&B and Select grade decking timber?
S&B (Standard and Better) is the premium appearance grade with fewer natural characteristics like knots and gum veins. Select grade is more economical but will have more natural variation across the boards.
What fixings should I use with Ironbark decking?
Stainless steel screws are the best screws for a hardwood deck. Pre-drilling is essential with Ironbark given its density (driving screws without pre-drilling risks splitting the boards, particularly near the end).
Is Ironbark a sustainably sourced timber?
Our grey and red Ironbark timber decking is responsibly sourced throughout central to southern Queensland. If chain of custody certification is important to your project, speak to us before ordering.
