Key Features of QLD Spotted Gum Decking S&B
- S&B grade decking provides a premium, consistent deck surface colour & style
- As a hardwood, Spotted Gum is naturally resistant to rot, decay & pest damage
- Queensland Spotted Gum is responsibly & locally sourced
- Suitable for internal & external applications
Why choose QLD Spotted Gum S&B?
Spotted Gum is naturally strong due to being a hardwood decking timber. This means it stands up to heavy foot traffic and outdoor exposure without any added treatments or supports. S&B grade decking has a higher standard of appearance, with less natural flaws like gum veins or knots that a Select grade board. When you choose Spotted Gum for your backyard deck, you can enjoy a unique project finish as no two Spotted Gum decks look exactly the same. Their natural tones also deepen and develop character over time.
What does S&B grade mean?
S&B stands for 'Standard and Better', which is the premium grade in timber decking in Australia. S&B boards have fewer natural characteristics such as knots, gum veins and borer holes (much less than Select grade boards).
Can I use Spotted Gum on an outdoor deck exposed to the sun?
Yes. Spotted Gum is one of the best-performing hardwoods in Australian outdoor conditions. It's naturally durable, handles humidity and UV exposure well, and its hardness makes it resistant to the wear and denting that softer timbers can suffer in high-traffic outdoor areas. If the deck is exposed to direct sunlight for a majority of the day you will need to oil the deck more often than the standard 6 months.
What finish should I use on Spotted Gum decking?
You should use a quality penetrating timber oil for Spotted Gum decking.ย Timber oil penetrates the timber surface to nourish the wood and protect the colour from UV fading, as well as guard against moisture penetration. Regular oiling (typically done every 6 months depending on sun and foot traffic exposure) will keep the boards looking rich and vibrant.
Can Spotted Gum be used for internal applications as well as outdoor decking?
Yes. QLD Spotted Gum decking boards can be used for internal projects. Its attractive grain and colour variation make it a popular choice for feature screening walls or small DIY projects.
Where is this Spotted Gum timber sourced from?
Our Spotted Gum is responsibly and locally sourced from Queensland. Buying locally sourced timber supports Australian forestry operations and reduces the environmental footprint associated with importing timber from overseas.
How tough is Spotted Gum compared to other decking timbers?
Spotted Gum is one of the most dense Australian hardwood species. This makes a great decking choice. Its hardness means it resists denting, surface wear and splintering better than softwood species like Pine.
Will the colour of Spotted Gum change over time?
Yes. All natural timber decking will change colour over time. To minimise the severity of fading and colour changes, regular oiling will preserve the rich brown tones and slows the natural greying process. If the deck is left without oil, it will gradually develop a silver-grey patina, which some people prefer aesthetically (but this can weaken the strength of the boards).
What fixing method is recommended for Spotted Gum decking?
Face fixing the boards with 10Gx50 stainless steel decking screws. Use a countersinking bit to pre-drill the boards (this reduces the risk of over-driving the screws). Given Spotted Gum's density, pre-drilling is recommended regardless of fixing method to prevent splitting the boards or sinking the screws too deep during installation.
