Why should you choose select grade merbau decking?

Select grade decking is a popular choice for premium, high performance decks. Select grade boards are more consistent in appearance, with fewer knots and natural elements than other grades like S&B or Feature – giving you a cleaner and refined finish accross the whole deck. On top of that, Merbau’s rich reddish-brown colour boasts warmth and character when maintained with a decking oil.

FAQs

What does ‘ripple’ mean?
'Ripple' refers to the ribbed underside of the board. The ripple profile helps with airflow beneath the deck in order to deter the boards from cupping or warping due to extended moisture exposure under the decking boards. Whilst a ripple is a helpfuil feature for extending the lifetime of your deck, adequate installation and drainage are both important factors when building a deck.

Which way should the rippled side be placed?
The ripple should face down as it allows for better airflow beneath your deck

Do I need to oil this merbau decking before installation?
Yes. These boards are not pre-oiled and require three coats of a quality decking oil before installation. Oiling beforehand helps protect the timber and ensures better coverage, especially on the edges and underside. It's important to allow adequate time to dry between each coat.

Can merbau be used in bushfire-prone areas?
With a BAL-29 rating, these boards are suitable for use in bushfire-prone areas. Always check your specific site requirements and local regulations before building.

Will merbau decking bleed tannins?
Like many hardwoods, merbau can release tannins, especially when first exposed to rain. It’s important to wash down the boards before and after installation with a deck wash that can remove tannins and ensure water runoff won’t stain surrounding surfaces.

Is kiln dried merbau better than air dried?
Kiln dried boards have reduced moisture content, which improves stability and reduces the risk of excessive movement after installation.

What joist spacing is recommended for 90x19 decking?
Joist spacing will depend on your project and local building requirements, but 450mm centres are commonly used for 19mm decking boards. Always confirm with your builder or relevant building standards.

Is this product sold in set lengths?
No. These boards are supplied in random lengths to total or the closest linear metre required, and this may include shorter lengths.
