QLD Mixed Hardwood Feature Decking Packs

SKU: N/A

From $2,121.80 each, Inc. GST

QLD Mixed Hardwood Feature Decking packs are a practical choice for outdoor decks where budget matters more than a flawless finish. They suit landscaping projects, rental properties, rural builds and anywhere a rustic, natural look is acceptable or desirable.

Benefits of QLD Mixed Hardwood Feature Decking Packs

  • More bang for your buck – feature grade is priced lower than S&B grades due to its natural flaws
  • Genuine hardwood durability – Queensland mixed hardwood species are naturally tough and well suited to outdoor conditions
  • Great for informal or rustic builds – the natural characteristics work with the aesthetic, not against it

If you’re looking for a hardwood QLD decking timber with less natural flaws, take a look at our QLD Spotted Gum Decking.

Please note: This product is non-refundable & sold in packs of lineal meter.

Our Feature Grade timber will include characteristics such as short lengths, gum veins, borer holes and other distinctive features. Due to these features, we recommend allowing a 30% wastage factor when calculating the amount you need.

Description

Feature grade hardwood decking gives you the same species and structural strength as higher appearance grades, with the natural character of Queensland hardwoods. These packs may include gum veins, borer holes, short lengths and other characteristics that are perfectly normal in Queensland hardwood species, but don’t suit jobs where a premium finish is the priority.

Key Features of QLD Hardwood Feature Grade Decking

  • Includes a mix of QLD hardwood species (ironbark, spotted gum & iron-gum)
  • Features natural characteristics such as gum veins, borer holes & short lengths
  • Sold in packs by lineal metre (LM) – lengths range from 0.9m (minimum) to 3.6m (maximum)
  • Available in 86×19 & 135×19 profiles

Why choose QLD Mixed Hardwood Feature Decking Packs?
Queensland hardwood has been used in outdoor projects across Australia for generations. These species are naturally dense and durable, which means even feature grade boards are handling the same UV, moisture and foot traffic as S&B grades. For rural sheds, farm decks, rental properties or any project where the finish is secondary to function and value, this is a sensible way to buy hardwood without paying for a grade you don’t need. The character markings that define feature grade aren’t defects in any structural sense, they’re just part of what the timber is.

FAQs

What does 'feature grade' mean for decking?
Feature grade timber decking will include natural characteristics like gum veins, borer holes and short lengths that don't meet the visual standards of higher appearance grades like S&B. The timber is structurally sound, it just has more natural markings.

What species are included in QLD mixed hardwood decking?
The packs may include a mix of Queensland hardwood species such as ironbark, spotted gum and iron-gum. Because it's a mixed species product, the exact combination can vary between packs.

Why do I need to allow 30% wastage?
Feature grade packs include short lengths and boards with natural characteristics that may need to be worked around or cut out. The 30% wastage factor accounts for this so you don't run short on your job.

Can I choose the boards that come in the pack?
No, you cannot select the boards or specific lengths provided in this pack.

What fixings should I use with hardwood decking?
Use stainless steel fixings when installing hardwood decking. Especially in locations where the deck will be repeatedly exposed to water.

How do I work out how many lineal metres I need?
Use our decking calculator! It does the hard part for you, just put in your measurements. Make sure to set the "Wastage Factor" to 30%.

Do the lengths come pre-sorted or mixed?
The packs contain a mix of lengths ranging from 0.9m to 3.6m, with an average of 1.8m. They are not pre-sorted by length.

What's the difference between this and S&B grade decking?
S&B (Standard and Better) is a higher appearance grade with fewer natural characteristics and more consistent lengths. It suits jobs where a cleaner, more uniform finish is needed. Feature grade is the practical choice when budget is the priority and a natural, rustic look is acceptable.

Does hardwood decking need to be oiled or sealed?
Yes. Hardwood decking should be oiled or sealed after installation and maintained regularly to protect against weathering, UV and moisture. The frequency depends on your climate and the amount of use the deck gets. A good rule of thumb in Queensland is to oil your deck once every six months.

How do I deal with cupping or warping in hardwood decking boards?
Some movement is normal as the timber adjusts to its environment. Correct installation with appropriate fixing spacing helps minimise this. For low-ground decks, choosing a thicker board profile and ensuring good airflow beneath the deck will reduce moisture related movement.

Can I use this decking in a bushfire-prone area?
Queensland hardwood species have inherent fire resistance properties, but whether they're suitable for your specific BAL rating depends on your site assessment and local council requirements. Always confirm compliance with a building certifier before specifying any product for a bushfire-prone area.

What's the best way to cut and finish the boards on site?
Use a sharp carbide tipped blade for clean cuts on hardwood. Sand any rough cut ends and apply a quality decking oil or end-grain sealer to all cut ends as soon as possible after cutting to reduce moisture uptake and checking.
