Why choose Merbau decking thats pre-oiled and dressed all round?
Merbau’s combination of natural strength, rich colour and pest resistance mean it genuinely delivers on both performance and appearance (arguably the two most important deck qualities).
Dressed all round profile decking boards are a practical advantage during installation. All four sides are smooth so you’re not locked into a fixed orientation on each board and can pick the best-looking face as you go. This makes a real difference to the final result.
The pre-oiled finish means the timber arrives on site with its first two coats already done, so you’re not starting from scratch. Decking boards that are not pre-oiled will require at least three seperate coats of oil before you can even screw them into the deck, which means at least three full days of board preparation.
What is DAR decking?
DAR stands for dressed all round, which means all four sides of the board have been machined smooth. This gives you a clean, consistent surface on every side and the flexibility to choose which face to present upward on each board during installation . This is useful for getting the best possible appearance on the surface of your deck.
Do I need to oil the deck again after installation?
Yes. Even though the boards arrive pre-oiled with two coats, we recommend applying one more coat after installation, before the deck is put into use.
How do I maintain my merbau deck?
Merbau is a low-maintenance hardwood by nature. A wash down and re-oil every six months maintains the colour and protects against moisture. Before re-oiling, a dedicated deck cleaner will remove any weathered oil and surface grime, leaving the boards ready to absorb a fresh coat evenly.
Will Merbau stain my pavers or surrounding areas?
Merbau has a relatively high tannin content, which means it can leach reddish-brown tannin stains onto surrounding pavers, concrete or pool water (particularly in the first few months after installation). Sealing the deck with timber oil directly after installation and regular hose downs can help reduce this.
What lengths will my boards be and can I choose to only receive long lengths?
Merbau DAR decking is only sold per lineal metre, so you only need to order the lineal meterage that your project requires. Use our decking calculator to figure out your LM. if you require specific lengths for your deck, choose our set length merbau decking instead.
What fixings should I use with Merbau decking?
Stainless steel screws are strongly recommended to secure your merbau boards to the joists.
