Why choose Modwood Flame Shield?
If your property sits in a designated bushfire attack level zone, your decking choice needs to meet the requirements set out under AS 3959-2018. Flame Shield is one of very few decking products on the market that can do that while still delivering the warmth and texture of a natural timber finish. The R11 slip rating makes it practical for outdoor walkways and patios, and the composite construction means it won’t demand the ongoing maintenance that traditional timber would.
As a part of the Flame Shield ModWood decking range – these boards are not fully capped and may weather over time due to the wood content inside the boards. This means that similarly to timber decking, the boards could grey over a long time span (many years). For a fully capped composite board that won’t fade – choose the Xtreme Guard Modwood Decking.

What makes Flame Shield different from standard Modwood decking?
Flame Shield is a specially formulated composite board with a fire retardant additive included. It's designed for use in bushfire-prone areas where standard decking products may not be compliant, or BAL rated building products are required.
What BAL ratings is Modwood Flame Shield certified for?
Flame Shield can be used in BAL-12.5, BAL-19, BAL-29 and BAL-40 rated areas.
Can I install it with an enclosed subframe?
Yes. Flame Shield can be installed with either an enclosed or unenclosed substructure, giving flexibility depending on your site and design requirements.
Does Flame Shield have an anti-slip surface?
Yes. Flame Shield features a deep embossed pattern on the board surface with an R11 slip resistane.
What length does this board come in?
The Modwood Flame Shield composite decking is only available in 5.4m lengths. You can cut these to your preffered size
Are these boards still low maintenance like standard Modwood?
Yes. No oiling, staining or sealing required. A periodic sweep and wash-down is all that's needed.
How is Modwood Flame Shield fire resistant?
A fire retardant additive is incorporated into the board composition during manufacturing. It's not a surface coating, so it won't wear off over time.
What fixing system can I use?
The Modwood coloured head screws are suitable, consistent with other Modwood products. Non compliance of fixing instructions will void warranty.
