The Modwood Deck Screw Depth Setter is a small tool that solves a common problem on decking installations โ inconsistent screw depth. Whether you drive a screw too deep, or not deep enough – you’re left with a potential trip hazard and untidy finish. The auto-stop mechanism eliminates both issues, engaging at the pre-set depth every time and letting you know with an audible pop when the screw is properly seated.
Key Features of the Modwood Depth Setter
- Auto-stop mechanism prevents over-driving and recess stripping
- Adjustable depth setting via locking and adjustment rings for a precise, repeatable result
- Free-spinning stop collar with rubber O-ring protects the board surface during installation
- Compatible with Phillips & Torx driver bits
Why choose the Modwood Screw Depth Setter?
On a small DIY deck, an inconsistent screw depth is an annoyance. On a professional residential installation with hundreds of fasteners, it becomes a real problem โ both for the look of the finished deck and the integrity of the board surface. The depth setter keeps every screw at exactly the same depth from the first board to the last, without slowing down the installation process. It’s particularly valuable when working with Modwood Xtreme Guard, where pre-drilling is mandatory and getting the seating depth right first time protects the capped surface from damage.
Installation notes
To set the depth, loosen the locking ring, adjust the ring to your desired position โ making sure it engages at least two full threads on the tool body โ then lock it in and test on a scrap piece before starting. Use with a standard drill only; an impact driver will override the auto-stop mechanism. When the mechanism engages and you hear the pop, the screw is set.
What does the depth setter actually do?
It controls how deep a screw is driven into the composite deck board, stopping automatically at a pre-set depth every time. This means every screw sits flush or just below the surface consistently across the whole deck.
Can I use it with an impact driver?
No, the screw depth setter must be used with a standard drill only. An impact driver delivers too much rotational force and will override the auto-stop mechanism, defeating the purpose of the tool and potentially damaging the board surface or stripping the screw recess.
How do I set the depth the tool will screw to?
Loosen the locking ring and slide the adjustment ring to your desired depth position, making sure it engages at least two full threads on the tool body. Lock the adjustment ring in place with the locking ring, then test the depth on a scrap piece of material before starting on the deck.
How do I know when the screw is fully set?
The auto-stop mechanism makes an audible pop when it engages fully. In most materials this is quite distinct.
What driver bits does it work with?
You can use the depth setter with both Phillips and Torx bits.
How do I replace the driver bit when it wears out?
Disconnect power to your drill and retract the tool fully before removing the worn bit with pliers. To insert the new bit, retract the tool fully again and push the bit all the way in until it's fully seated. Always disconnect power before changing bits.
