Tips and Tricks: Building Stairs for Your Deck

We have supplied timber decking materials for a lot of our neighbours in the Brisbane and Sydney areas. We get a lot of feedback from our customers after they have finished or while they are in the process of building those decks. For some reason, our feedback indicates that building the stairs is one of the trickier parts of building a timber deck. Here are some tips and tricks to make it go easier.

Essential Tools

If you don’t have them already, you will need some tools that are essential to building stairs correctly. We are sure you already have most of these tools, but use this as a checklist. You will need a tape measure, a level, a handsaw, a circular saw and a calculator. If you really want your stairs to be perfect, buy a pair of stair gauges. These will allow you to perfectly duplicate every step.

Also, you need a hammer, a corded drill, a framing or carpenter’s square, a chalk line, sawhorses, clamps and safety glasses.

Local Building Codes

Your council will usually have regulations for safe step design. Before you start, make sure you know that yours are compliant or that there are no regulations. Either way, you are going to want to make your steps as safe as possible.

Right Materials

You are going to want to use hardwood with a durability class of 1 or 2. Timber that is rated less durable than a 2 can be treated to H3 or better. Merbau, also called Kwila, is a great choice. So is Blackbutt.
