Why choose treated pine palings?
Pine fencing continues to be a popular choice thanks to its balance of durability, affordability and workability. H3 treatment extends the service life of the timber in external above-ground use, while the natural pine finish can be painted or stained to suit the job.

What are pine palings used for?
Pine palings are most commonly used for boundary fencing and front fences. Theyโre cost-effective, easy to work with and suit both standard paling fences and lap and capped styles.
Are pine palings treated?
Our palings are H3 treated, meaning theyโre suitable for above-ground outdoor use. Treatment protects against rot, fungal decay and termites.
What does H3 treatment mean?
H3 treatment means the timber is treated for above-ground external use. Itโs designed to handle weather exposure but not constant ground contact.
Do timber fence palings shrink?
Yes. Being a natural timber product, pine can shrink slightly as it dries out after installation, as well as swell during periods of wet / humid weather. Itโs common practice to butt palings tight when installing to allow for natural shrinkage.
Can pine palings be painted or stained?
Yes, but allow treated timber to dry properly before coating. Once dry, you can paint, stain or oil to change the look or extend lifespan. Use exterior-grade products designed for treated timber like our QCoat timber oil.
Should I leave gaps between palings?
For standard boundary fencing, palings are usually installed without gaps between. Some styles, like 'lapped and capped' or 'good neighbour' fences intentionally use consistent gaps for airflow and design.
What fixings should I use for pine palings?
Use heavy-duty galvanised nails to ensure long-term durability. Ring shank nails are common for softwood fencing.
