What does DAR timber mean?
DAR stands for 'Dressed All Round', meaning all four faces of the board have been machined smooth. This gives you a consistent, splinter-free surface on every side without any additional sanding or prep work before installation.

What does H3 treatment mean for pine screening?

Can pine screening be used indoors as well as outdoors?
Yes. While the H3 treatment makes it suitable for outdoor use, pine screening works just as well for interior applications like feature walls, staircase battens and furniture. The smooth DAR finish suits both settings without any additional treatment needed indoors.

Can I paint or stain these screening battens?
Yes. DAR pine takes both paint and stain very well, making it easy to match your screening to an existing colour scheme or timber finish. For outdoor applications, always use a quality exterior grade paint or stain and apply a primer coat first for the best and longest lasting result.

Is pine screening able to be used structurally?
No. This particular pine screening is suitable for non-structural applications only. It's not appropriate for load-bearing elements like posts, bearers or joists. For structural framing, you'll need a product with the appropriate structural grade rating like our Pine Framing F7 H3.

Can I use pine screening for a pool fence?
Pine screening is commonly used as infill panels within a pool fence frame. Keep in mind that pool fencing in Australia must comply with local council regulations and Australian Standards regarding height, gap spacing and gate requirements. The screening itself is non-structural, so it needs to be fixed to an appropriately rated structural frame.

Does pine screening need to be sealed after cutting on site?
Yes. You should always apply an appropriate H3 sealant to any cut ends after trimming on site. We recommend our Ecoseal H3, it's easy to spray over the cut end .

What hardware should I use to install pine battens?
Pine screening is typically fixed using galvanised or stainless steel screws or nails. Stainless steel is the better long-term choice for outdoor applications as it won't rust over time.

Will pine screening warp or twist outdoors?
Like all softwood timber, pine can move with changes in moisture and temperature if it's not correctly finished and maintained. Applying a quality timber oil seals the surface and significantly reduces moisture uptake, which is the main cause of warping and twisting in outdoor timber.

How do I maintain pine screening outdoors?
Pine screening should be inspected annually and re-oiled as needed to prevent moisture getting into the timber. Stained screening benefits from a fresh coat every couple of years depending on sun and weather exposure. Keeping the surface sealed is the single most important thing you can do to extend the life of pine screening in an outdoor setting.
