Since Narangba Timbers has been a family business since 1972, we have supplied timber decking to thousands of people in the Brisbane area. We currently carry Blackbutt, Ironbark, Spotted Gum, Mountain Grey Gum, Brazilian Teak, Pacific Jarrah, ACQ Treated Pine and five different grades of Merbau.
All of the timbers are popular, but the one timber that has resulted in the most positive feedback over the years is Merbau. Our Merbau is imported from Indonesia.
Benefits of Merbau
Merbau offers natural resistance to termites, which is crucial for the Brisbane area. It has a Class 1 durability rating and can last as long as 25 years when taken care of. Although classified as a hardwood, it is not quite as hard as many hardwoods. That makes it easier to work with.
One of the biggest benefits to Merbau that make it perfect for timber decking in the Brisbane area is that it is one of the seven timbers that is classified as resistant to bushfires. In the interests of full disclosure, Blackbutt, Ironbark and Spotted Gum are also resistant to bushfires.
Once the work is done, most people like Merbau because of its distinctive reddish brown colour. Many Australians think Merbau with a clear finish provides the best aesthetics of any timber decking material.
In a climate like Brisbane, it is important for timber to be stable and have low shrinkage and expansion rates. Outdoor timber in our climate goes through extremely humid times and extremely dry times. If it is susceptible to shrinkage and expansion, it can cause a lot of problems.
