An Introduction to Composite Decking

Among all of our timber decking options, you may notice one called “composite decking.” Many of your neighbours in the Brisbane area have decided to use composite decking and we have not received anything remotely resembling a complaint. We would like to explain what composite decking is so you can see if you are interested in it or not.

Composite decking is any decking material that is made of more than one timber. Our composite decking is made of Outback Red, Weathered Gray, Coastal Ash and Brown Box. The fibres or sawdust of these timbers are combined with plastic and binding agents to create a strong timber product. Usually, composite decking is stronger, heavier and denser than natural timber.

Composite decking became popular in the 1990’s when high demand and new manufacturing techniques created a market for a plastic/timber composite.

Benefits of Composite Decking

The main benefit of composite decking is that it is less likely to crack or split than natural timber. It has more resistance to fading, making it great for outdoor applications where sunlight would normally cause timber to fade. It is also maintained much easier than natural timber and keeps its appearance better.

Composite decking comes with a groove system that makes it easier to put together. It is faster and it looks more uniform. One of the big benefits is that you can go barefoot on composite decking and not worry about getting splinters. Composite decking is made to look as close to natural timber as possible.

The Only “Disadvantage”

The only disadvantage to composite decking is that it costs a bit more to buy. However, there is almost no maintenance required to keep composite decking clean and shiny. All you need to do is wash it with soapy water.
