We are open and trading this Ekka Friday for all your timber requirements.

As the foremost timber suppliers in Brisbane, we like to use our blog to educate consumers about different timbers and what projects can be done with them. Today, we would like to tell you about Merbau, also known as Kwila.

Merbau is popular for timber decking in Brisbane and is one of our favourite timbers for timber decking. Merbau is a timber that is grown in Northern Queensland but it can also be sourced from the Pacific Islands, South East Asia and Papua New Guinea.

Merbau is very strong and durable; it is used for a host of structural applications including construction, engineering and marine applications. It is also used for outdoor furniture, joinery and flooring.

At Narangba Timbers, we go to great lengths to ensure that all of our timber has been sourced from sustainable, ethical sources but that is not always the case elsewhere. There is a lot of Merbau being sold from forests that were not harvested in an ecologically sustainable way. Always make sure that your Merbau was obtained from ethical, sustainable sources.

A Merbau tree can grow up to 40 metres in height. Its trunk diameter is around 0.6 metres. In the forest, Merbau has a lot of local names and its bushy leaves and branches form a natural canopy.

When Merbau is harvested, the heartwood is a beautiful orange-yellow brown colour. As Merbau ages, it darkens into a gorgeous red-brown colour that makes so many timber decks so attractive. That heartwood is the Merbau we make available for timber decking.

Merbau provides natural protection against termites and rotting. When air dried by kiln, it seasons exceptionally well. Merbau has a wavy, interlocked grain that is distinctive and attractive. Merbau offers a combination of grain and colour that provides an unforgettable aesthetic to timber decking.
