3 Steps for Safe Decking

A deck can be a very good addition to your home, considering the various benefits it brings to the table. To make it work, however, you’ll need to ensure that it will be as safe as it should be. You don’t want to risk building a deck that has the tendency to collapse. Otherwise, you might end up with more problems than you bargained for.

With that in mind, let’s discuss some simple, yet important steps for safe decking:

1. Anchoring

There are two types of anchoring to keep note of: deck anchoring and house anchoring.

You must ensure that your deck posts are firmly and securely anchored to the ground, in order to prevent it from collapsing. Take note: there are different methods of deck anchoring, depending on your particular circumstances.

The efficiency and safety of your deck will also depend on how you anchored it to your house. Remember that a deck is not a free-standing structure. It is connected to your house, which means you should ensure that it’s been safely and durably connected, through the appropriate tools and procedures.

2. Deck Floor

Make sure that your deck floor is made of durable and sturdy materials. Use properly sized joists and beams, to keep the structure safe. It would also be advisable to utilise galvanised brackets for fastening, as these are more effective compared to nails. Double-check if everything has been fastened and spaced properly.

3. Security Features

Keep your deck more secured through the following steps:

  • Use rail posts that have been properly anchored and connected to the deck.
  • Install banisters, regardless of how short or long your deck stairs may be.
  • Use a gate to prevent children from walking down the stairs without supervision.
  • Utilise the proper finishing, as this can provide additional durability, security and stability for your deck.
